Dream Cow

It's so fluid, at first I thought it was totally abstract. You have to sink into a dream state in order to see the birds and countryside that are the dreams of the cow(s) meandering by underneath your perspective. Excellently dreamy!

Homestead #1

Living out in rural California, we saw a lot of old structures like this. The roof collapsing, the wood dry and falling away. I just think the artist did a terrific job capturing the feel of this rural decay!

Surreal Abstract Drawing Colored Fast Food

"Served up especially for you, a delightfully vibrant, colorful, take-off on the fast food we eat today."

I just really liked this illustration and can see any number of shapes/images in it. I don't know if I was what I think I see is influenced by the title of the piece. If it had been named for lawn mowers instead of fast food, what would I have then seen? The world may never know.

Sphere Squared

This post features a terrific illustration by David Arai, "Sphere Squared" - in the artist's own words, this is a "pen and ink drawing based on the simple pattern of the mandala, a circle in a square, representing the divine within the material world."

Cosmic Thing

This is one of my own art squared pieces. It started out as a pencil doodle while I was watching a movie and just ended up as something that looked like abstract or surreal album cover art from the 70's. The name 'Cosmic Thing' just seemed appropriate.

Dogs, Monkeys, Robots et al

Julien Chung has a fantastic illustrative style that you can't help grinning at, and which also makes excellent use of the square format, as in the examples below:

It's a simple cartooning style, but one that you can tell looks simple because it's been thoroughly practiced and perfected. And he has quite a knack for animal expressions that just makes me laugh. A statement from his site: "Julien Chung is a Canadian artist and designer. Maskarade started out as a pet project inspired by the household animals - a dog and a lovebird. The drawings soon evolved into colorful and whimsical animal designs for the paper products and home decor industries." Click here to visit his shop, "Maskarade", and check out the rest of his cartoon art, square or not.
