Flight of the Valkyries

An awesome comical interpretation of the flight of the Valkyries! What a terrific representation of Norse Mythology - a fun look at a sober storyline.

Spatial Arrangement

From the artist: "This image is part of a series called Spatial Arrangments. The series is a study in color, texture, tone and pattern repeat. Images were created from original photographs of metal surfaces, woods, paints and drawing. These images work well as a series or in sets."

I saw a lace curtain with light shining through the part over the window and the rest hanging in shadow. And perhaps an old wall underneath - perhaps with mold or old markings. Great use of neutrals!

Silver-Dream I

I love the austerity of this piece. It's almost TOO subtle, but perfect for being so. The artist(s), Verbeek and Van Den Broek, also have a number of other terrific art squared pieces in their gallery with a similar feel, and a number of more colorful works as well.

Checkerboard Watercolor

This art squared piece is actually one of mine - I really love combining square/formal geometries with the soft, organic feel of intermingling watercolor paints! The original is a 10"x10" watercolor on 140 lb. hot press paper.

Gold Dahlia by Stephanie Windham

I really liked the simple lines and virtually flat shading in this flower painting - the outlines and other lines keep it interesting and simple at the same time. Click here for more info!

Poppy Day Oil on Canvas by Misook Kim

This oil painting by Misook Kim combines a wonderfully soft golden background with an overgrown shed and a dramatic use of perspective and color with the poppies in the foreground. I love the rustic and enchanting feel of this piece!

Windmills on the Canal by Jennifer Lommers

Windmills on the Canal by Jennifer Lommers is as bright and cheerful as you get. (I also think that everyone who's never been to Holland probably has at least a little fascination with those legendary windmills.) I love the broad brush style in this painting too. A great square composition!

Abstract Painting 7 by Dag Compeau

Abstract Painting 7 by Dag Compeau is like art squared squared - a wonderful geometric watercolor that draws the eye into the center of the painting, wondering what the heck is going on there!

Are those the rectangles more traveled? It's like punching through a shiny clean exterior to get at the real world grinding away underneath.

Milo Cat

Milo by Sharon Bloom is a wonderful, soft-touch watercolor painting, and I have to use the word 'whimsical' with it. And if you know cats, you can see cat attitude all over this piece of art squared!

Parcours

I'm a fan of abstract art and find it amazing that I can just stare at an abstract painting for a long time, just soaking up all the subtle nuances in color, shape, and texture. Parcours by Sylvie Schmitt is an excellent example:

There's a wonderful complexity and symmetry about this piece that keeps pulling the mind back into it!

Finding Nirvana & Sand Castles

Today I'm happy to present two wonderfully surreal art squared images from American artist Ryan Ayers. The first one is oil on canvas, titled "Finding Nirvana", and the second is digital art, titled "Sand Castles".

Finding Nirvana - Oil on Canvas 36"x36"

Sand Castles - Digital Art

Ryan has a terrific eye for composition and a fantastic sense of the surreal and spooky/eerie - I was going to say macabre or horror, but it's less creepy and more psychological if you ask me, and just a touch more magical as well.

Click on the images above to purchase prints from the artist or click here to see his entire gallery and visit all the other cool alternative worlds he has created!

Color Square Abstract 1

This is one of my art squared works; it's soaked with springy colors and vibrancy and geometry - done in watercolors.
