Who Are You Looking At?

A giraffe that's pulling a face, blowing a raspberry, etc. I chuckle every time I look at it!

Poetic Thought
The pale colors and delicate plant on top of these books seems to tell more about the contents of these books than the titles themselves might. And I can almost feel the unevenly cut pages and smell the old book smell!

Heart Fence
If you lived near the yard with the heart fence, wouldn't you get a little pick-me-up everytime you saw it? I think there's also some kind of cosmic symbolism of a fence being punctured by hearts - heh.

Blue Smoke by David Lindes

This cool, blue macro photograph from David Lindes brings to mind the blue-grey colors left behind after the red-orange-yellow of the just extinguished flame. The grit and charcoal are captured perfectly!

Planet Elliot Square by Derek Lumpkins

Derek Lumpkins applied an interesting method to this black and white image - it's a photo of Elliot Square, manipulated into a spherical planet shape - clever idea!
"Black and white image of John Elliot Square in Roxbury, Massachusetts presented as a "planet." See the square presented in 360 degrees with the First Church of Roxbury, Thomas Dillaway House, and other prominent landmarks included."

Old Town Square by Studioworks
"Maria Rosina paints with oil paint over archivally printed black and white photography. Old European town with the traditional narrow cobble stone streets and houses seeming to squeeze in tight next to one another opens up to the town square where the heart of the activity lies. Through dynamic compositional innovations about architecture and landscapes she develops ideas reflecting the elegance of symmetry and panoramic vistas evoking places of the impossible."
That says a lot more than I was going to say, and better - heh. Really, it just caught my eye with the fish-eye-esque perspective and the pale pastel colors - just very cool. The fact that it's a square photo of a town square is just an added bonus.

The Bird by Sophie Cagnac
The Bird by Sophie Cagnac is perfect in square form, for extra dramatic effect. A fantastic black and white photograph, with the bird in silhouette against clouds or mist. Puts you in mind of a variety of Alfred Hitchcock movies!

Blueberries in a Bowl
A friend of mine brought this photograph to my attention. First, nothing like a good 'circle-squared' type image. But it's the simplicity of the shot that did it for me - the black and white of the overall photo with just BARELY any blue in the blueberries? Sweet! (Click the photo or click here to get a framed or unframed print of this image for your wall.)
You can see this photographer's entire gallery by clicking here - definitely a feast for the eyes, as she is a rock climber and tends to take her camera along on trips.

Uplifting
When I first came across "Uplifting" by Phil Hilfiker it just made me grin...

This photo is littered with dual features. First, the monochrome background in contrast with the bright colors in the socks. Second, the two feet themselves (okay, that may be pushing it, but I'm still going to count it.) And third, the title, "Uplifting" - referring to the cheerful vibes of the socks AND the escalator itself moving upwards. Sweet!

St. Mark's Square
St. Mark's Square by Janeen Wassink is a wonderful ambiatic (is that a word?) photo with some very special techniques applied to get that final look. "An unusual take on a familiar landmark scene. I used a vintage toy camera to capture this scene shot from St. Mark's Square in Venice, Italy. Light leaks in the plastic camera gave the image the unique tonal bands. I then added the pink, yellow, and inky blue colors, and added the lamplight glow in Adobe Photoshop."

Just spectacular!

Contemplative
The black and white photo, Contemplative, by Kevin Wong, described in his own words, "The water streams onto the rock which is on the grounds of a shrine in Kinkakuji, Japan. The spray continuously changes pattern. The mist is refreshing. It feels cool, looks clean...pure."

Classic Essaouria Boat Shot
Today's featured art is The Classic Essaouria Boat Shot by Sarah Franklin
I love the technicolor feel of this photograph, taken in Essaouria, Morocco - this perspective is apparently a classic shot of these fishing boats. I also love the darkened corners, like the photo had been locked in a trunk in someone's attic for 30 years before it was found and framed.

In October
Our next Art Squared Art feature is by Lars Raun of Denmark. It's a piece called "In October" - I completely missed posting this in October but the image still speaks in November too, I feel. The flame of the sky combined with the mysterious darkness underneath the autumn branches - it's like a boundary between worlds. (Click on the image to buy prints from the artist.)
